The Battle Acedemy – Choosing the right Team and Planning
As we stated on earlier in the guide, it’s important to plan and choose the right teams.
Of course you can always just choose a few Pokemon here and there, but you’ll need
counters, and Pokemon to attack, and defend your team.
It’s important to have Pokemon like this when selecting your team.
Keep reading to find out how to make your team Balanced when planning!
The important part to any team, is making it balanced. If you’re team is weak to one specific type, and they all share that weakness, you’ll suffer a very quick defeat.
Imagine this is my team below:

Now, can you spot the problem with this team? Sure, they’re all powerful Pokemon, but there’s a problem with them.
If you notice, they all share one common weakness, which is fire, followed by ground. If you were to take this team into
battle, all you would need is one fire Pokemon on the opponents team, and whatever you switch into will be vanquished
within a few turns.
Now, here is a well balanced team that would survive against an opponents team, since they all are balanced.

From this team, it’s very well balanced considering weaknesses. You might point out that two Pokemon share a weakness,
being electric, but that’s only two Pokemon compared to the 6 that we had earlier that were weak to Fire.
The plus side of the weakness to electric is that your opponent will try to hit you with an electric attack, and in which case
you can switch out that Pokemon with Tyranitar to absorb the hit. Another alternative could have been Hippowdon, in which you would take no damage from the electric attack. Any team that you use should follow these standards of being balanced, and in coherance with another. If you do so, your team will be sucessful, and you’ll win battes.
Tanks, Leads and Sweepers
So now that you’ve got a bit of an idea on what you’re going to use for your team, we’ve got a suggestion for you.
Instead of using Random Pokemon, follow this standard, in which many pro battlers use.
- One Pokemon is up front and deals damage or sets up
-One Pokemon can absorb special hits (Special Tank)
-One Pokemon can absorb phsyical hits (Physical Tank)
-One Pokemon can deal high powered Special Hits (Special Sweeper)
-One Pokemon can deal high powered Physical
Hits (Physical Sweeper)
-One Pokemon to fill your team up (Can be anything from another sweeper to a tank)
Following these standards, it gives you that much more a chance of being sucessful in battling.
Some leads are used to set up a move called Stealth Rock, in which you set down rocks and every time your opponent switches into a new Pokemon, that Pokemon will get hit with damage from the rocks. This is especially useful if the Pokemon has a weakness to Rock (Stealth Rock’s type) – Take Charizard for example. Stealth Rock will deal over 1/2 damage to Charizard just upon switching in! Taking that fire lizard down afterwards should be a piece of take.
Choosing the right team and planning.
Some other leads are there to set up Light Screens/Safeguards/Reflects or even Spikes, which acts much like Stealth Rock, only flying type Pokemon can evade it, and you can use Spikes 3 times to set up 3 different layers for maximum damage.
It should be up to you to find a good strategy that works for your team, and what meets your standards.
Sweepers
A sweeper is a Pokemon that is used to technically, sweep another persons team (Defeat multiple Pokemon [AKA Attacker]) There are two different types of sweepers: Physical, and Special. As you already know, Physical Sweepers are those Pokemon that specialize in Physical Stats, such as Attack. Machamp, for example, is a great specimen for a Physical Attacker.

- Machamp has high physical attack stats, and high speed, making him a great Physical Attacker.
You wouldn’t want to place special moves on a Machamp, since they’re special attack stats aren’t very high.
Special Sweepers
Special Sweepers are Pokemon that specialize in Special Attacks, like Alakazam:
- Alakazam has very high Special Attack (one of the highest in all of the games) and has high speed, making him a great SP. Attacker.
As with Machamp, Alakazam’s Physical Attack isn’t great (What do you expect? Alakazam to hit you with a spoon?)
Tanks
A tank is generally what it’s name is. It’s a Pokemon that you use to absorb hits. For example, you’d take a Milotic, which would be a Special Tank, since
it has very good Special Defense to absorb Special Attacks.
- Milotic not only has great Special Defense, but also has the Ability Marvel Scale which gives it +50% Defense bonus, allowing
you to even tank both ways for both Physical and Special.
Physical Tanks
You should know it by now, physical tanks are those Pokemon sent to abosrb physical blows.
Gliscor is a good Physical Tank, has he has access to Roost, which restores his HP, and Swords Dance. A charged up Earthquake or Stone Edge is sure to put a dent in any Pokemon.
It’s also important to remember that when you’re selecting a tank (for whichever reason, Special or Physical) you should always make sure that the tank has access to an HP restoring move, such as Rest, Roost or Recover.
The Final Slot
The final slot in your team, could be anything you want. It could be another Tank, or another Sweeper, whatever will fit your team.

What to watch out for
There are some things you should watch out for, and those are your weaknesses. In battle, always be prepared for the unexpected,
because even with the most research, you never know what your opponent will use, or what moveset your foe will have.
So – Now you’ve got a good team planned?
Hopefully you’ve got a pretty good idea for a team that you want to use. For an example on our guide, we’re going to use this team:
